DNA: MKM Census: Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 14 - 1 : Jonathan Free White Persons - Males - 15 thru 19 - 2 : William & Lewis Free White Persons - Males - 50 thru 59 - 1 : William Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 14 - 1 : Nancy Free White Persons - Females - 50 thru 59 - 1 : Nancy Census: 1850 census at District 45, Harrison Co., IN shows Wm Crawford, 77, farmer, b. PA and Nancy, 77, b. PA. They are enumerated immediately before Jonathan Crawford and his wife Hettie. Will: The will of William Crawford was written in February of 1852 and proved on November 16, 1852. The provisions of the will are as follows: All of his home farm (followed by legal description) to son Johnathan Crawford and his children and their heirs. Johnathan, in consideration of this is to keep and maintain his mother in a comfortable manner during her life and to bury her without charge after her death. To the children of his son Lewis he directs the executor to purchase land in the sum of three hundred dollars to be held by them and their heirs. Money to come from the sale of his personal property. To his son William he gives two hundred pounds of bacon. The residual of his personal estate is divided between his daughters Nancy Eckard and Rebecca Flanagan equally. Not mentioned in this will are the children of his deceased son John, our ancester being a 12 year old orphan at the time. Son Josiah and daughter Elizabeth are not mentioned either. I had assumed that Lewis Crawford was dead, given the mention of his children but I find him in the 1860 census in Taylor, Harrison, IN with his wife Catherine and two children. William married Nancy DENBO on 22 Sep 1796 in Shelby Co., KY. Nancy (daughter of Soloman DENBO and Ann WOODFORD) was born about 1773 in PA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
Note: Sons of George and Elizabeth Crawford: George and Elizabeth Crawford apparently had two sons, Robert and William. William was a veteran of the American Revolution and received a land grant in Kentucky for his service after the war. Apparently, both brothers moved to Shelby County, KY. Many family trees I have found list William Crawford (the veteran) as the father of William Crawford (born in 1769 and died in 1852) who married Nancy Denbo. However, I believe that Robert was the father of the second William. Reasons: (1) The will of Robert Crawford (died about 1803-1804, Hardin County, KY) lists a William Crawford married to Nancy Denbow as an heir. If Robert had children of his own, it seems unlikely that he would name a nephew as an heir. From Diaspora-Vol.-3-No.-3-1996.pdf: "Deed “heirs of Robert Crawford”, included Robert and Marion Denbow, William Crawford and wife (Nancy Denbow), John Crawford and wife (Polly, daughter of Solomon Denbow), and William and Peggy Highfield. (2) The William Crawford who was a veteran of the American Revolution is listed as having been born in 1762 (d. 1839, Shelby County, KY) on an application for the Sons of the American Revolution, which would make him too young to have been the father of the other William Crawford. I found reference to the birth year of Robert Crawford as being 1750, so he was older and old enough to father the second William. Probate: Heirs of Robert Crawford included Robert and Marion (Crawford) Denbow; William and Nancy (Denbo) Crawford; John and Polly/Sally (Denbo) Crawford and William and Peggy Highfield.
