Jonathon married Lydia DUMBLETON on 8 Dec 1681 in Springfield, Hampden, MA. Lydia (daughter of John DUMBLETON and Mercy MARSHFIELD) was born on 16 Apr 1661 in Springfield, Hampden, MA; died on 31 Jan 1739 in Springfield, Hampden, MA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
Note: "As eldest surviving son of Henry Burt, he began early in life to follow his father's pattern of public service. Even before his father's death, he was elected a Selectman, serving from 1657 to 1659; and after a considerable hiatus, again in 1676, 1680, 1682, 1684, 1687, 1689, 1691, and1697. He was Town Clerk from 1697 through 1700. He took his turn as fence viewer in 1660 and 1664; appraiser for town rates (we should call it assessor), 1663; surveyor of highways, 1652, 1655, and 1662; measurer of land, 1662 and 1663; and hayward, 1683. He was on the committee to arrange for building a new meeting house in 1674, and in 1669 was appointed with Miles Morgan to sit in the gallery to check disorderly youths during worship. He is often referred to as "Deacon" in the town records. His record, we are happy to report, falls just a trifle short of perfection, for in 1665 he was one of sixteen men fined for absenting themselves from town meeting without sufficient excuse. Lacking our modern fines for petty traffic violations, the Town had to reinforce its finances in this and other ways. he was also one of ten men complained of for turning their cattle into a certain field contrary to order; and in the good company of John Holyoke, Widow Bliss, and others, his fence was found defective in 1678. But he made himself useful by keeping a bull which the selectmen hired in 1681 and 1682 to serve the lower end of town. The bullthereafter appears no more in town minutes, but whether he wore himself out in twoyears, or some other inhabitant produced a more virile specimen for thw town's use, we are not informed." Jonathon Burt wrote an eye-witness account of the burning ofSpringfield, MA, 10/5/1675 by Indians. DNA: MKM

Received compensation for fire November 1639 at Roxbury, MA, recorded in Massachusetts Bay Colony records. Moved to Springfield, MA in 1640, of which town he may be regarded as one of the founding fathers and chief citizens, though he did not arrive with the earliest settlers. Note: With Henry Smith, Thomas Cooper, Samuel Chapin and Richard Sikes, he was a member of the first board of Selectmen, 1644, serving continuously through 1652 and again in 1654. Shortly thereafter, the family was represented on the board by his eldest son Jonathan. Henry Burt was the first to hold, in Springfield, the Office of Clerk of Writs, being elected 29 May 1649 and serving until his death in 1662. The vital statistics for that period are in his handwriting. After Rev. George Moxon left Springfield, the town for some time was without a settled minister and got along with what may be termed lay readers as a substitute. It was voted 18 Feb 1665/6, that Mr. Holyoke and Henry Burt should carry on the work of the Sabbath, and recompense was voted to Deacon Wright, Deacon Chapin, Mr. Holyoke and Henry Burt for their labors in that work the previous summer. On 9 Nov 1657, Mr. Holyoke, Mr. Pynchon, Deacon Chapin, and Henry Burt were appointed to continue this work. Although there were attempts to secure a settled minister, none remained long until the Rev. Pelatiah Glover commenced his pastorate in 1660. Buried: Find A Grave e-Memorial
