Abraham Birckhead and William Holland, Sr., were chosen by the vestry as the first Church Wardens of St. James' Parrish. Mr. Holland was probably a kinsman of Colonel William Holland. He served not quite a year as a church warden.
Abraham Birckhead served as warden and as Clerk of the vestry, and on April 27, 1701, was elected to the vestry. This day must have been an important one for him. According to the church register "Mr. Abraham Birckhead, age 29 years born October 1675, baptized April 27, 1701," and the next entry on the register: "Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham Birckhead and Rebecca, his wife born April 4, 1701, baptized April 27, 1701.

This Indenture made in ye twelfth year of ye Reigne of Our Sovereigne Lady Anne by ye Grace of God of Great Brittain Ffrance & Ireland Queen & Defender of the ffaith. A.D.1712... Between Abraham Birckhead of A.A. Co.Prov.of Maryland Gent. and only son of their of Abraham Birckhead late of said Co. Dec.-of the one part, & Richard Harrison of CalvertCo. on the other part. Whereas the Rht.Hon Cecilius Calvert-did Grant unto the said Abraham Birckhead, the ffather, a Parcell of land called Birckhead's Chance on branch of Patuxant, to hold the same Abraham Birckhead the ffather & his heirs & the Lord Baltimore did also Grant unto Abraham Birckhead Land called Birckheads Mill in A.A. Co. on a creek called Lyon's Creek and whereas the said Charles Lord Baltimore in 1685 did Grant unto the said Abraham Birckhead the ffather, all that tract called Birckhead's Right 600 acres. To have & to hold he the said Abraham Birckhead, the ffather and his heairs & assigns forever.
This Indenture (Witnesseth)that the said Abraham Birckhead party to this Deed for Lbs.200 to him in hamd paid by the said Richard Harrison-hath bargained sold, released & confirmed to him said Richard Harrison the within mentioned tract of land. To have & to hold etc.

Meeting at the Clifts the 18th Day of the 10th Month 1691 Abraham Birckhead and Rebecca Billingsley laid their intentions of marriage before this Meeting, it being the second Time, and those ??? who were appointed by the last monthly Meeting at West River to inspect into their ??? from former Engagements, Consent of Parents and Relationis, finding no Objections, and the young Womans Parents, signifying their free consent before this meeting doth therefore leave it to them to appoint a Time and Place for the Accomplishment of their intended marriage and Nehemiah Birckhead and Rich Johns are desired to assist them in that affair.

Abraham Birckhead died in AA Co. leaving a will dated Jan 7, 1684, proved Nov 23 1685. In it he left Birkhead's Parcel to his only son Abraham, along with other tracts. He named his wife Anne, and then his nephews Nehemian, Eleazer, and Solomon. He also named his sister Margaret Smith (and her children John, Eliza, Mary and Margaret), and the children of his nephew Thomas Rogers.
