NOTE: I do not know if this is "my" James. Some things fit and others don't, age is correct, place of birth might be correct, and birthplace of mother is not as I expected. This family had a habit of reporting their birthplace as either Maine or Canada. Calais, Maine and Milltown, New Brunswick are pretty much conjoined at the US/Canada border and families could drifted back and forth over the border. I have recorded that the birthplace of James' mother as Milltown, not Scotland but.....her name was McDonald.

    Note:
The surname McGoldrick is borne by descendants of the Mag Ualghairg sept, a branch of the O'Rourkes, who were rulers of Breffny. This sept was located on the Leitrim-Fermanagh borders. The descendants of the sept were scattered so that the surname McGoldrick now is found mainly in Co, Tyrone and Co. Sligo as well as Co. Fermanagh. McGolrick, McGoulrick and McGorlick are variant spellings on record while the English surname Goulding has been reported by the Registrar of Births as used interchangeably with McGolrick in Downpatrick Union, Co. Down.

    Residence:
The first permanent white resident of Calis arrive in 1779 from Machais, Maine, some 45 miles south. Many of the first residents were from that area in Maine. It is said he and two other built the first saw-mill in the area.
Some years later Saint Stephen, across the St. Croix river was settled by men from Calais.
By 1790 there were 16 residents of Calais and several hundred in Ste. Stephen.

The index to the 1881 census at Milltown, Charlotte, New Brunswick lists the family of Andrew McGendnet. The family members and ages are those of "my" Andrew McGoldrick so I can only assume that the handwriting or image must be bad. The index lists the following: Andrew, 53, b. IRELAND, labourer, Roman Catholic; Ellen, 40, b. IRELAND, Roman Catholic; children all b. New Brunswick, all Roman Catholic: James, 22; Andrew, 19; George, 17; Margret, 14; May, 9.

The death certificate of Andrew lists his death place as Union Mills. Union Mills, Milltown and Saint Stephen merged to become Saint Stephen.

    Buried:
The McGoldrick monument is about feet high with inscriptions on four sides. I deduced it must have been erected by Andrew McGoldrick, son of Ellen and Andrew, Senior, maybe at the time of Ellen Bresnahan McGoldrick's death. Census:
1830 census at Baileyville, Washington, ME enumerates a William Ryan. In the household are 1 male, age 15-20 and 1 male, 40-50. There is one female, aged 30-40 enumerated.

Females enumerated are 1, age 30-40. This partially fits the William and Bridget family, William would have been about 58, Bridget about 40, and the 3 youngest children. James seems to be missing and there are 2 extra males, age 20 - 30.

    Census:
1850 census at Baileyville, Washington, ME shows William Ryan, 68, farmer, b. IRELAND; Bridget, 50, b. IRELAND. Immediately following are John Ryan, 38, farmer, b. IRELAND; Mary, 20, b. IRELAND and children all b. ME: Mary, 1; Bridget, 2/12; Matthew, 19; Timothy, 15; Martin, 11.
I believe that the older children in the 2nd household are the children of William and Bridget. I am unsure who John is, another researcher suggested that perhaps he is the son of William and an earlier wife.
