Nathaniel B. Alden was among the early members of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Brandon, Vermont (a few miles south of Leicester), organized in 1801. After that church was split by dissention, Nathaniel and Barbara began worshipping at the Methodist Church of Middlebury (north of Leicester and Salisburt), where they were among the members listed in 1809. Nathaniel and a Thomas Carpenter were listed as local preachers. Nathaniel was licensed to preach in 1810 and was the first pastor of the Methodist Church of Goshen, Vermont, organized in 1818.
