US Geological Survey map: Shows a 'Kennon Creek' just north of Plattsburgh, NY. The creek empties into Cumberland Bay on Lake Champlain. An old directory from the area shows the land of A.G.Kennon situated on the creek and at another location northwest of the homestead it lists A.G. Kennon Tannery. During a visit to the area, armed with the late 1800's map, we found the creek and photographed a tiny little area of 'rapids' in the woods near where we figured the tannery had been.

    Obituary:
    Obituary of Albert G. Kennon

For quite a number of months it has been the fortune of A.G. Kennon, whose home was just north of Corning to be a sufferer from nervous prostration and other diseases. He has required the constant attention of strong men, both day and night for many weeks. At the hour of 3 o'clock a.m. on Monday, March 10th, 1802 (sic), the angel called Death, came to his relief and his spirit passed to the Grand Master above. Mr. Kennon lived for many years in the township of Nodaway ere removing to his late home. From the rough ashler in the quarries, he became as a finished corner stone of the building.

    Obituary of Albert G. Kennon

    Called Home

Death of an Aged and Highly Respected Citizen Last Monday

For some weeks the death of A.G. Kennon has been daily expected. For several years he has been failing in health and about three months ago he was taken much worse and never regained his strength. He said in the fall: "I do not expect to live through the winter." His friends thought his pluck and energy would pull him through, but he contended it would not. The disease that caused his death was the result of la grippe, contracted several years ago, and for the past few months suffered a great deal of pain and he welcomed the peaceful end of a long and useful career which came last Monday morning at the advanced age of 71 years, 2 months and 21 days.
The subject of this sketch was born in Plattsburg, N.Y., Dec. 20, 1830. In 1853 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Garrett who died May 14, 1887. They moved to Iowa in 1869 and located on a farm near Nodaway. To this union was born two children. F.A. Kennon of this city and Mrs. Clara Worley of Albany N.Y. On Nov. 5, 1888, Mr. Kennon married Miss Sarah C. McClelland and in 1890 they moved to Corning where he has since resided. To this union was born three children Ruth, Elizabeth and Helen.
He has been a shrewd and successful farmer, a thorough-going wide-awake citizen, with strong convictions and unquestionable courage. For a number of years he was treasurer of the Adams County Mutual Insurance association. Politically he was a strong advocate of democratic principles.
In his youth he became a member of the Presbyterian church. On coming to Iowa he became an attendant and supporter though not a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian congregation located near Nodaway. Mr. Kennon was a member in good standing of the Masonic order and the local lodge attended the funeral in a body and participated in the funeral exercises. The services were held at his late home in Corning at 10:30 this morning. Rev. M.V. Higbee preaching the sermon from the text chosen by Mr. Kennon himself, I Corinthians xv:22, "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive."

This is the first I've seen that Franklin lists his father as having been born in France - this is incorrect, but perhaps a clue as to nationality.
Franklin and Myra are listed on the census lines immediately after Sarah Kennon, widow of Albert, and her three daughters.

    Obituary:
Obituary entitled Death of Franklin LaRue states:

On Monday September 30, about 12:30 p.m. there passed to his reward one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of Adams county, Franklin LaRue, the cause of his death being largely old age. For a few days he had been suffering from a cold but his condition was not considered critical by his family. He was conscious to the last. The machinery of the body had done its full work and he peacefully passed away.
The subject of this sketch was born near Bath, Steuben County, N.Y., December 28, 1818, and at the time of his death was aged 93 years, 9 months, and 2 days. The funeral was held from the home in the northwest part of the city on October 2 at 10:30 a.m. conducted by Rev. Norman McLeod of the Presbyterian church. Internment in Walnut Grove cemetery along side of his faithful wife who was buried there January 6, 1901.
In his young years he attended Amherst college and studied civil engineering at Van Rensaeller institute, Troy, N.Y.. He was the youngest of a family of twelve children. When a young man he came west and located in Michigan and was engaged in surveying. Here he was married to Miss Amelia Chapin at Mason, Mich., Sept. 25, 1848. To this union were born eight children, six daughters and two sons, four of the daughters died at Lansing, Mich., for many years the family home, in their infancy. The two sons, H. H. and F. L. died and are buried in Corning. The living are Mrs. F. A. Kennon of Corning and Miss Myra LaRue who has made her home with her father.
The family came to Adams county in 1874 and settled in Mercer township. Soon after coming here Mr. LaRue was elected county surveyor and held the office for a number of years. He was an exceptionally good surveyor and much of the work done in this county was by him. In politics Mr. LaRue was a democrat and was a candidate for the state senate in Michigan on the ticket by James Buchanan in 1856. His first vote for president was cast in 1840 and in the present campaign he took a deep interest and from the start was an ardent admirer of Wilson and frequently remarked that he hoped he would live to cast a big vote for the New Jersey governor.
For thirty years he had lived in the home in which his death occurred in Corning, an honored and upright citizen whom it was a pleasure to meet and discuss the topics of the day and the events of many years ago. Until a few years ago he was a great reader and since he could not read on account of failing eyesight he had his daughter and others read to him and he was thoroughly posted on the topics of the day.

    Obituary of Amelia Chapin LaRue

The community was saddened Saturday by news of the death of Mrs. Franklyn LaRue, which occurered the night previous. She had been sick less than a week, having been confined to her bed only since the Sabbath before, and in the morning she had seemed to be in her usual health. Her death resulted from fever of the lungs with the complication of heart trouble. The funeral was held at the home Sabbath afternoon at 3 o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev. M.V. Higbee assisted by Revs. T.D. Ewing and J.A. Lovejoy. The remains were laid to rest in Walnut Grove cemetery. Amelia Chapin was born in New York and was seventy-five years of age. Hers had been a life of activity of mind and body and even down to the last days she was interested in all that pertained to the welfare of those about her. She was the mother of eight children, four of whom died in childhood. Those surviving her are H.H. and F.L. LaRue and Mrs. Fred Kennon of this city and Miss Myra LaRue of Omaha. Twenty-eight years of family life have been spent in and near Corning. Mrs. LaRue was a member of the Presbyterian church and had ever taken an earnest interest in its progress. She was a woman of serene and cordial temperment and in all the relations of life did more than her full duty. To her aged companian who has lost the helpmate of a life time and to the sons and daughters who have lost a loving mother the entire community tenders its sympathy.

    Obituary of Amelia Chapin LaRue

The sudden and sad news passed around from person to person at an early hour on Saturday morning that Mrs. LaRue, of north Corning, had died during the night of Friday, January 4th 1901. Mother LaRue, as her friends loved to call her, was a kind neighbor, a loyal wife and a loving mother. Columns of type could not tell more in expressing her daily life. Her immediate family consisted of H.H. LaRue, the lumber merchant; Frank L. LaRue, president of the Corning Savings bank; Mrs. Fred Kennon, and Miss Myra LaRue as her children and her honored husband. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon with a large attendance. The GAZETTE tenders its heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. Her children have met with the greatest loss that can ever befall them. While it is true they have reached an age of manhood and womanhood, they will find, as others have, that no one can take the place in their hearts and homes of a mother who has gone to the other shore.

    Note:
David Kennon was born in Massachusetts about 1786. His father was Isaac Kennon also born in Massachusetts. David's mother may have been Ruth Burnham. By 1830, David Kennon was living in Plattsburgh, Clinton, New York. He appears to have been married twice. His first wife may have been SophiaTowsley/Tousley. Together they may have had at least 5 children: Elvira, Elizabeth, Sophia, Julia and Caroline. In the 1830 census for Plattsburgh, Clinton, New York, David Kennon is the head of household for a family of 14. By 1830, David Kennon had remarried to Fanny Fillmore. She had two daughters from an earlier marriage and David and Fanny had one son, Albert, about 1830. By 1840, Isaac Kennon, David's father is mentioned in the family as a pensioner for the Revolutionary War. May 26, 1845, David Kennon was appointed administrator of Isaac Kennon's estate by the Clinton County court as Isaac Kennon had died intestate. By 1850, all five of David and Fanny's children are mentioned:Albert, Septa (after Fanny's father), Frances, Sophia and Helen. In 1860, David and Fanny are living by themselves in Plattsburgh, Clinton, New York. Albert, however, is living next door with his wife Betsey Garrett and their two children, Frederick and Clara. The three daughters are all unmarried at this point and are living with other relatives. David Kennon probably passed away between 1860 and 1870. David Kennon was a tanner and currier by trade.

Their children were Elvira; Elizabeth who married George F. Buck; Sophia, who married George Ransom; Julia; and Caroline, born 1819, Plattsburg, New York and married Lorenzo Dow Brady at Cincinatti, Ohio 20 Feb 1845. David Kennon married second Sara or Fannie Fillmore (widow) of Chazee, New York, a niece of former president Fillmore. Sophia Tousley first wife of the above David Kennon. HBP

    Census:
Until 1850 the Federal Census lists only the head of household and after that the number of inhabitants by age and sex. There is no way of knowing whether the family is blended or if the household members are employees or not.

This David Kennon and household does not fit any scenario I can discern. In 1810 David and Sophia are newly wed and have no children, David is about 24 years old and Sophia about 18.

1810 census at Chazy, NY shows David Cannon:

    Census:
Until 1850 the Federal Census lists only the head of household and after that the number of inhabitants by age and sex. There is no way of knowing whether the family is blended or if the household members are employees or not.

David is now 34 and Sophia about 28, they have 5 daughters ranging in age from 1 - 8. There are two daughters for whom I have no death dates, if they are already dead then females under 10 fits.

The 1820 census at Plattsburg, Clinton, NY shows David Kenan:

    Birth:
"Albertus Larrowe (LaRue) was probably of Huguenot descent. He was born in New Jersey within sound of the guns of the battle of Trenton. In 1795 he started on foot for Canada, but when he arrived in Bath, NY, he was too lame to go farther. He subseqently purchased land in the area of Wheeler, NY. He raised a family of distinction, some of whom lived in nearby Cohocton and Hammondsport. In spite of increasing farm activities, he found time to serve as supervisor of the town of Wheeler and as Master of the Masonic Lodge in Cohocton.
Descendants spell the name both ways LaRue and Larrowe."

Note:General George Washington’s army crossed the icy Delaware on Christmas Day 1776 and, over the course of the next 10 days, won two crucial battles of the American Revolution. In the Battle of Trenton (December 26), Washington defeated a formidable garrison of Hessian mercenaries before withdrawing. A week later he returned to Trenton to lure British forces south, then executed a daring night march to capture Princeton on January 3. The victories reasserted American control of much of New Jersey and greatly improved the morale and unity of the colonial army and militias.
