8401 Samuel Marshfield came to the US about 1648. He was primarily a tailor. He was evidently an active business man and served the town in many ways.1663 - 1668 he held the office of Selectman 1680, 1683, 1684 he represented Springfield as Deputy in General Court. MARSHFIELD, Samuel (I2374)

8402 Samuel Wright came to Springfield, MA with wife and eight children; moved to Northampton, MA in 1665. Samuel was one of two first deacons at 1st Congregational at Springfield, MA and was later deacon at Northampton, MA. Source of info. Genealogy of Lieut. Abel Wright, of Springfield, MA by Rev. Stephen Wright, NEHGS vol. 35, page 74-82, Jan. 1881.

Regarding the children of Deacon Samuel Wright
Ellen Baker forwarded your query about the references for Deacon Samuel Wright and his children. Unfortunately, we have yet to find any vital statistic records for any of the Deacon's children except James, Judah and the infant Helped who died shortly after birth. The births of these last three children are recorded in the early Agawam (Springfield) MA. records which are located at the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum's Archive library in the Quadrangle area of downtown Springfield.

That Samuel Wright Jr. (or Sgt. Samuel Wright as he was known) was the Deacon's son there can also be no doubt. The Deacon was forced to acknowledge this son in official documents to the Springfield courts of those days for some misdeeds. (See Pynchon Court Records in "Families of the Pioneer Valley," Regional Publications, West Springfield, MA 2000).

Evidence of the relationship to the Deacon for the girls, Margaret, Hester (Ester), Lydia, and Mary is most strongly established by the wills left by the Deacon and his wife. All are named in both wills. And, although for Margaret and Lydia there are also Springfield VR for their marriages (Lydia married four times!) and other records for Margaret (See NEHGR Vol IX, p. 200), there is nothing for Hester or Mary in the official records, and we know of their marriages via mention in wills and death records.

So I source the wills first. The original handwritten wills, or shall I say officially transcribed wills, for the Deacon and Margaret are in the First Records Book of the Town of Northampton, MA. This record book is very fragile and is currently archived in the Hampshire County Clerk's office in Northampton, MA. It may be viewed by special request made to the County Clerk at the time of your visit. With their kind assistance, I have made a copy of all the pertinent Wright ancestry documents in it, including the two wills. I translated and transcribed both wills in their entirety for my publication.

In these wills, the Deacon makes mention of each of his children, Samuel, Margaret, Hester, Lydia, Mary, James and Judah. Margaret, his wife, does much the same in her will mentioning also Hester's husband, Samuel Marshfield, and son James' daughter, Helped, to whom she bequeathed her bed.

What is notable about these two wills is that neither the Deacon nor Margaret mention anything about Benjamin Wright or Hannah (Wright) Stebbins of Springfield who have been often assigned by previous researchers as his eldest children. What I think is most important is that there is no mention made of any of the children of Benjamin or Hannah (Wright) Stebbins, either. It is true that Hannah had died in 1661, prior to the Deacon (1665), and might not have been mentioned in his will (prepared 1663) for that reason. But Hannah's children were alive and husband, Thomas Stebbins, did not remarry until 7 years after the Deacon's death. So, if the Deacon was so diligent in bequeathing to each of his other children, and since he would have known at the time of making his will in 1663 that Hannah was dead, he would have known he had to make provisions for Hannah's portion to go to her children. Therefore, I think it is certain he would have named them in his will if they were his grandchildren. On the basis that neither he nor Margaret mention these potential grandchildren in their wills, I believe Benjamin and Hannah were not his children.

Nevertheless, Benjamin and Hannah have often been assigned as the eldest children of the Deacon, and thought I do not believe this is the case, I do believe they may have been niece and nephew to the Deacon or some other relation. Certainly I believe they were some member of the large Wright clan to which the Deacon belonged (originating from Sir John Wright of Kelvedon Hatch, Co. Essex, England).

8414 Scrapbook at the Elk County Historical Society in Ridgway: (reported by Paula Pompeii of Falls Creek, PA, 6/16/2000: The first recorded wedding [at Holy Cross Church, Rasselas] was on October 13, 1856, being a double wedding of the brothers John and Peter Weidert; John married Helena Kleisath, daughter of Francis and Theresia Kleisath; Peter married Margaret, the daughter of George Pistner. The grooms were the sons of Bernard and Mary Budevin Weidert. [Simmons-Markert family.paf] It is not known by whom the first altar was built [at Holy Cross Church,Rasselas], but there seems to be a strong supposition that Father Wendelin Myer, O.S.B. had John Pistner build the altar and tabernacle. We do not know the relationship of George Pistner and John Pistner, perhaps they were brothers. According to Paula Pompeii of Falls Creek, PA: A descendent of Joseph and Magdalena Pistner told me that George Pistner is the father of John and Joseph Pistner who arrived with them at the Port of Baltimore in 1844. Linda Bauman posted a message to Ancestry.com indicating that John Pistner was from Schölkrippen, Bavaria. The June 1870 Census for Jones Township, Elk, PA, p. 15, showed John Pistner, 53, farmer, real estate $2,000, other property $800, POB Bavaria, Eliza, 51, POB Bavaria, Techla, 19, POB PA, Fred [Ferd], 17,Margaret, 12, Mary, 7, all born PA. The 6 Aug 1850 Census for Jones Township, Elk, PA showed John Pistner,28, farmer, real estate $62, b. Germany, Eliza, 27, b. Germany, Joseph,5, b. PA, and Tekla, 2, b. PA. John's age and Elizabeth's age are considered unreliable on this document. PISTNER, John (I10579)

8417 Seeking info on fate of DICKERSON siblings who were orphaned in Bloomington, Muscatine in 1840. Nine boys and one girl ranging from 11 to 24 in age. Specifically seeking what became of Xenophon the youngest who was born in 1828 in Ohio and brother Whitten. I am a direct descendant of brother Jesse who lived in Muscatine and Louisa counties until his death in 1871. Family arrived at Bloomington in 1836 with mother Sally Dailey who passed in 1839-40. All children born in Washington County, Ohio. They lived in Indiana prior to arrival in Iowa. Sister, Nancy walked the Oregon Trail in 1844-5. Brothers Luther, Frederick, Vachel and Thomas went south to Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma & Texas. Brother Silas believed to have gone to Illinois and later Texas. // Bill Dickerson // alpca2913@aol.com //

Noted in the Muscatine list one James Welch. I believe he is the husband of my great aunt Nancy Dickerson. They were married in Muscatine in 1840. The Dickersons settled in Muscatine (then Bloomington) in 1836 and spread out from there. My great grandfather Jesse moved on to Louisa County. James and Nancy went to Missouri in 1844 and walked the Trail to Oregon. I would be grateful for any reference to James Welch or anyone with the surname Dickerson. Nancy had nine brothers. Her mother Sally died in 1839 and she cared for them as mother until moving on to Oregon. The father Joseph Dickerson had died enroute to Iowa. All were native to Ohio. James Welch was native to Kentucky. Thank you. Bill Dickerson, Milford, NH

8426 Several genealogist have assigned ancestors to John Cole, but none has produced proof of his ancestry.'The Parrish Family,' ( p. 336) lists a William Cole and his wife Sarah as possible parents of John with the caution that the relationship has not been proved.'The Early Settlers of Maryland'( p. 98) lists a William Cole and his wife Sarah as immigrants to Maryland in 1650-51. 'Descendants From First Families...' gives, without proof, the following ancestry for John Cole: John Cole (above), s/o Thomas Cole who owned a plantation called Coale's Harbour, which today is known as Baltimore Harbour; s/o William Coale; s/o WilliamCoale by his 2nd wife Hannah. This last William married 3 times and resided in what is now Anne Arundel Co., MD. 'Genealogies of Virginia Families' presents evidence that a Sarah Cole was the sole heir of Thomas Cole who patented Coale's Harbor and therefore Thomas Coale is not the father of John. John Cole testified at the trial of Captain John Oldten who was tried and convicted and later given a royal pardon in the murder of Dennis Garrett, his father-in-law. COLE, John (I918)

8435 Sketch of the Life of Louisa Wells Chapin, by Dr. Augusta J. Chapin of Omaha, Nebraska. Read before the Eden Ladies Aid Society by Carrie L. Chapin and requested to be published.
Louise Wells Chapin was a descendant in the seventh generation from Deacon Samuel Chapin of Springfield, Mass. She was the daughter of Levi Chapin and Achsah Smith, who were married in Chicopee, Massachusetts, January 10, 1810. She was born at Camillus, New York, December 6, 1827, to which place her parents had removed some years earlier. She died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Achsah S. Horton, in Vevay, September 20, 1895. When 17 years of age she came, with her fathers' family in 1844, to Eden, Michigan, where she spent the remainder of her life, a period of more than 50 years............Miss Chapin was for 40 years a stanch member of the M. E. church..............She was one of the noble few of whom it can truthfully be said: "She hath done what she could."

8439 SOME INCIDENTS OF THE WAR OF 1812 AND OTHER OLD TIME REMINISCENCES By J. W. HUBBELL Father (Julius C. Hubbell) at first boarded with Mrs. Grant, who lived in a log house about where Mr.and Mrs. Fletcher Gilbert now live. Afterwards he boarded with Septa Fillmore in a log house near where the hotel now stands. In 1807 five families, the heads being Septa Fillmore, Seth Graves, Eleasur Graves, and John Brownson moved up from Saxe's Landing to Chazy, which was known for many years as the 'Five Nations'. The origin of the name is reported as follows. A company of traders from the south, stopped at the Landing to purchase furs. On inquiry of the landlord, 'Old Chantonette,' he told them that there were no furs for sale there, but there was an Indian village three miles west, called the 'Five Nations,' where they could doubtless purchase furs; they started with high expectations, but just before reaching there, found these five men working on the road, they told their mission and the directions they had received. 'Trash' exclaimed one of the party, 'that's one of old Chantonette's tricks.' There were many others who settled here at that time, but I cannot stop to speak of them at this time. Many of them were soldiers of the war of 1812 and 1814, and afterwards remained here. There was one I remember well; he was a shoemaker, and lived in the southwest corner of John H. McCan's lot. FILLMORE, Septa (I1331)
