On June 5 1917, Morton Cecil Spicer registers for the WWI draft. He gives his residence as Sandstone, MN and states he was born on Feb. 13, 1887 in MXXX Valley (illegible), Iowa. His occupation is listed as farmer, he states he has a wife and 3 children. He states that he served 1 year in the 8th US Cavalry. The registrar states he is of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair.

According to his sister Evelena, Morton deliberately exposed himself to TB in order to get an early discharge from the military.
